Collective Architecture in Sleek Magazine

What is the new architectural vision represented by young collectives? Collective Disaster gave an interview about it in SLEEK magazine, together with ELEMENTAL, Assemble and Something Fantastic. You can read our full interview here: How did Collective Disaster form? What was the attraction of collective approach? The collective started somehow very organic. We are all friends, or friends of friends, we have moved cities, expanded our circles, stayed in touch or lost contact. We wanted to be able to develop our friendships, discussions and mutual interests across borders. In a way we were already doing projects before we had a name, even if they were just organizing a party or a BBQ. The decision to do projects under a common name was a way to make that official, a promise to keep doing things together even though we live in different cities. Collective Disaster started as a network of friends, were... View Article

Miracle Mountain Residency and Biomeiler workshop

Learn how to harness the natural heat of compost, come to Amiens! We will built a compost-based bioenergy system ala Jean Pain. The workshop will be lead by expert Arie Van Ziel  (biomeiler.nl) and it is free of charge. It will take place on May 7-8 in the Hortilonagge of Amiens, starting 9.00. Moreover, Collective Disaster is going to be on a Residency in Amiens from 1-15 of May and you all have an open invitation to join us on this mission to realise a Miracle Mountain. So far, the extended family includes Tessa Zettel and Robin Weber. Miracle Mountain is part of the yearly festival in Les Hortillonnages of Amiens. Jean Pain Biomeiler

Spring cleaning

So, last week we visited Amiens in order to prepare the site for installing Miracle Mountain. Despite the slight rain showers, the sky was mostly blue, some people were taking a tour on a boat, Guillame with his chainsaw took down some trees, we collected the prunings for the compost heap, cleaned up some bushes, while Andrea was camouflaged like an Ivy. Places with a lot of water are just so calming. Thanks to Andrea’s negotiation skills, it also seems we will get a good deal to construct the hot spring out of some nice metal material.  We are all so looking forward to come back next month! ps: Just outside Brussels airport there was an advertisement depicting a teddy bear with a missing eye. How ironic!

Collective Disaster lands in Amiens.

For the yearly edition of the festival “les Hortillonnages” in Amiens, our Miracle Mountain has  been selected to enrich the beautiful natural setting of the park. We had our first visit of the area and under an unstoppable rain we discover the idyllic series of islands, ponds and lakes in which our Miracle Mountain will rise. The Hortillonnages is a great example of transformation and revitalization of landfills. Originally created for agricultural purpose has been rescued from a destiny of neglect and abandon thanks to the Maison de la Culture of Amiens that transformed it in a productive and artistic landscape. During these months we will finalize and realize the project that will open to public in the month of June.

Monsters and creatures

During the search a series of amazing source of inspiration were monster and creatures depicted in old maps and books. The journey into what since ever represents the fears and the energies of human being helped us in finding a good synthesis that could visualize the un-displayable.

Holy Shit, what a summer in the park!

Symposium & Trésor Noir Soup Collective Disaster is delighted to invite you to participate in a playful discursive event to reflect upon the knowledge and experience gathered at Usine du Tresor Noir during Parckdesign 2014. Usine du Tresor Noir is a dry toilet installation in public space which produces fertile soil (terra preta) out of the visitor’s waste. While in function this summer, a number of topics came up, such as socially engaged art, sustainable infrastructure, waste and responsibility about public space. We are very much interested in what ingredients you have to add in the soup and the discussion; we would be pleased if you could join. Other invited guests include terra-preta expert Dr. Haiko Pieplow and artist Ayumi Matsuzaka who is going to prepare Trésor Noir Soup. WHEN: Sunday, September 14, 15.00 WHERE: Parckdesign 2014, Avenue Jean Dubrucq 240 PLEASE BRING: a vegetable and something you consider waste... View Article

Saturnalia!

You are warmly invited to the revival of Fête du Saturn, an ancient Roman feast, dedicated to Saturn, the symbol of agriculture and toilets. Fête du Saturn was celebrated in Ancient Rome with a public banquet, followed by gift-giving, continual partying, and a carnival atmosphere in a state of social egalitarianism. Starting Saturday afternoon, through exercises and creative play, we will seek a poetic expression regarding the miracle of life making through waste. Do not worry if you don’t have any experience with creative expression! The workshop will be led by Sonia Saurer (known from the zinneke parade), an artist specialized in working with non-actors. This workshop will be an opportunity to meet, move around together, connect with nature, have fun, play and improvise. There will be fire, biochar, hot bath, compost, music, food, dance, trance, abundance of consciousness, a collective spirit. There is different ways of participation in the celebration.
